Important pup exercises

For pets as well as show dogs. This can help with dominance and with socializing.

It is very important that you teach your puppy to accept mild restraint, I do this at a very early age when they are with me but it is important for you to continue it in stages as well. As much restraint as would be required in a vet's exam or grooming. This way the pup is taught to feel at ease while being handled and touched.

As a pup I start this process by massaging your puppy several times each day, gradually increasing area massaged, time of massage, and people who massage, by following the progression listed below.

You should start this process by massaging your puppy several times each day, gradually increasing area massaged, time of massage, and people who massage, Gently massage your puppy's head, temples, put him on his side, roll him over slightly, his belly, tail, ears, legs, paws, pads, touch the nails.

If your puppy squirms, quietly say easy and hold him until he calms down then, and only then release him.

Your puppy should learn that if he lies still it will result him being able to get up.

NOTE! If you release your puppy when he is wiggling and fighting you this will be reinforced. teaching him the wrong lesson!

You can also offer your puppy a chew toy to help keep him quiet. If your puppy bites or mouths you, give an ouch no! so he understands that his mouthing hurts and continue massaging.

Massage your puppy several times a day for a few days, about three minutes each time. If your puppy squirms hold him still until he calms down, then continue.

Once your puppy is at ease and completely comfortable with the first stage of massage, gently place him on his side, roll him over slightly, and massage in the same manner, now incorporating his belly, hind legs and feet, flanks, tail, etc.

Teaching your puppy to allow you to gently open his mouth and put your finger inside is important too! This will help prepare him to enjoy any routine care that you may need to give his teeth and ears. A show dog needs this attention. Gently running it around inside his mouth and over his gums, pick up his ears and lift his tail touch his testicles as well.. As you do each of these things, talk to him quietly, and even offer him a snack. This will help prepare him to enjoy any routine care that you may need to give his teeth and ears.
Repeat this exercise with your puppy three times a day, for three days, but now gradually increase the massage time to five minutes. Gradually (one at a time), have each family member work on massage exercises with the puppy

Eventually you would like a one of your friends to check his teeth, touch his tail, go over him. This will make your pup more social and relaxed.
