Important pup exercises
For pets as well as show dogs. This can help with dominance and with socializing.
| It is very important that you
teach your puppy to accept mild restraint, I do this at a very early age
when they are with me but it is important for you to continue it in stages
as well. As much restraint as would be required in a vet's exam or
grooming. This way the pup is taught to feel at ease while being handled
and touched.
As a pup I start this process by massaging
your puppy several times each day, gradually increasing area massaged,
time of massage, and people who massage, by following the progression
listed below. If your puppy squirms, quietly say easy and hold him until he calms down then, and only then release him. Your puppy should learn that if he lies still it will result him being able to get up. NOTE! If you release your puppy when he is wiggling and fighting you this will be reinforced. teaching him the wrong lesson! You can also offer your puppy a chew toy to
help keep him quiet. If your puppy bites or mouths you, give an ouch no!
so he understands that his mouthing hurts and continue massaging.
Eventually you would like a one of your friends to check his teeth, touch his tail, go over him. This will make your pup more social and relaxed. |
