It can calm them down fast getting them under control for spurts as pups. If you are going to do any conformation. It is a better command to start with because they tend to anticipate you and if you show it bait in the show ring they are more likely to sit to get it (if you have taught sit first) and that is not what you want to see. If it is charging at someone down will stop that and you can go gain control of you dog. Also being such a tall dog sit does not quite do what you need it to do his head may still be on the dinner table in a sit position ;-). |

If showing Gate work is important practice moving in a wide circle and a straight line at a jogging pace with long strides. Using long strides makes the dog do the same and extend its gate. Later have someone at end of straight-line give a treat after a good stack; this simulates a judge standing waiting. It makes them excited to get to that spot. It is great for the show ring really impresses the judge, "OUR" little show training secret! |
